East Town Motors History

Toronto, circa 1943My father, Bernard Mewid, opened a small tire and oil store on the Danforth in 1943. Soon after launching his new store, he was drafted into the Canadian Air Force to help with the war effort during World War II and was forced to sell his budding business.

In 1946, after being released from the air force and returning to Toronto, he decided to go into the used car business. And so, EAST TOWN MOTORS was born not far from his original location on the Danforth. In the forties, the Danforth was THE place to buy a used car. There were many well-known used car dealers located along the strip; the most famous being "Ted Davy". Long time Torontonians still know the name.

Toronto, car lot, circa 1945My brother, Brent, and I spent many a Saturday on the car lot washing and detailing cars. It was a big part of our lives growing up. Our father shared with us many gems of insights that have stayed with us to this day, such as: "You will never go broke taking a profit," by which he meant: Don’t be too greedy! Bernie also claimed that everyone needed to be a "salesman" in some fashion, which I still believe is true today.

As a tribute to our father, EAST TOWN MOTORS, INC. has been re-established. Today's market is very different from what it was in Bernie's day, which is why we have decided on a very focused scope of business. I look forward to this opportunity with excitement and enthusiasm.

Sales Manager
